As the new term starts, Direct Line home insurance is urging parents with students heading off to university to protect their property – and they could be covered under their parents’ insurance.

Halls of residence and student digs are easy prey for thieves, with people coming and going at all hours of the day, so Direct Line home insurance is using the beginning of the new term to warn against the perils of not being insured.

Laptops, stereos, and other entertainment devices that are common in university accommodation are among the most popular items top be stolen, Direct Line has found, and with several of each often being under one student house roof, it’s easy pickings for opportunist robbers.

Many students wrongly assume that their belongings will automatically be covered by their landlord’s insurance policy, but then they learn the hard way that this is not always the case when something get stolen.

But, parents who are worried about their kids’ posessions when they head of to uni can rest assured that they are protected under their Direct Line home insurance policy, the insurer says, they do not have to take out a seperate students home insurance policy.

Students’ belongings have up to £5,000 protection and the same level of cover that their parents have with Direct Line home insurance.

Commenting, Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line home insurance, said: “Students’ minds will understandably be on freshers week and the start of term, plus the prospect of living on their own for the first time.

“But they should also consider what would happen if their possessions were lost or stolen, and speak to their parents to see if they can save some of their loan money by including the items they’ve taken to university on their parents’ home insurance policy.”
