Levels of RAC cover

  • Roadside – The base level of cover offered by the RAC, covers you for breakdowns that occur over a quarter of a mile from your registered home address. If your vehicle cannot be fixed at the roadside this package includes a tow to a destination of your choice within 10 miles of the breakdown.
  • Recovery – With the recovery option the RAC will take 7 passengers and your car to any chosen destination within mainland UK if your car cannot be fixed at the roadside.
  • At Home – With this inclusion the RAC will attend breakdowns that occur within a quarter of a mile of your home or if your car won’t start when leaving your home.
  • Onward Travel – If your car breaks down and cannot be fixed at the roadside the RAC will provide either a hire car for up to three consecutive days, one night’s stay in a bed and breakfast or alternative transport.
  • European Rescue – Provides you with cover for breakdowns within 48 continental European countries.

The RAC also gives you the option of choose a vehicle or personal cover policy:

  • Vehicle cover – With this policy type you take out cover for a specific vehicle, so it is covered for breakdowns no matter who is driving it when it occurs. You can add up to three vehicles on a single policy.
  • Personal cover – With a personal cover option the policy holder is covered for breakdowns, so whatever vehicle they drive they will be provided with cover, you can take out cover for a household of up to five people.
Whether you drive often or less frequently, having breakdown cover in place is a good idea, as if you do breakdown getting help to come to assistance at the road side can be far more costly if you don’t have a comprehensive level of breakdown cover.

Although what each provider will cover you for varies in general they can help you with many other aspects than just a mechanical fault with your vehicle, for instance they could help if you lock your keys inside the car or if you run out of fuel on your journey.

Car breakdown cover plans come in different forms but generally provide a home option whereby if your car is within a certain mileage from your home the breakdown company will provide assistance.

  • Roadside plans require normally that you are outside a certain distance from home and if the vehicle cannot be repaired then it will be towed to a garage within a certain distance.
  • More comprehensive plans will provide additional services such as transporting you to your intended destination, putting you up for the night in accommodation if necessary, and car hire. It is important that you understand what your breakdown plan is covering you for so there are no unexpected surprises if your vehicle breaks down.

You will also find that to incite customers many breakdown insurance providers offer special discounts and incentives throughout the years, therefore you may want to view what offers are currently available from the different providers before you make your decision.
