Before you take out breakdown cover

You will find there are a variety of different providers of breakdown insurance, and each will have its own options. The packages offered by different providers often share some common features however, so before you take out a policy it’s worth shopping around and deciding exactly how comprehensive of a policy you want.

Common package level features might include:

  • Roadside assistance: often the most minimal and cheapest level of package available from a provider. It essentially offers you a certain amount of time worth of free labour at the roadside and if the vehicle cannot be fixed there a tow to a nearby garage.
  • Home Assistance: With many basic roadside assistance policies if your car won’t start when you’re leaving home in the morning or if you breakdown within a certain proximity to your registered home address (usually between a quarter of a mile and a mile radius) you do not have cover. For these instances you would need a package that featured home assistance.
  • Onward Travel: If your car cannot be repaired at the roadside but you want to continue driving then an onward travel package might be able to help. Some packages offer you with payment for a hire car or to put you up in accommodation overnight while your vehicle is being repaired.
  • European Cover: Most UK breakdown insurance policies to not offer you cover for driving elsewhere in Europe. For this you would need a European cover policy. European cover will typically grant you access to English speaking representatives who can help arrange for a mobile repair mechanic to come to your aide. Some policies even offer cover for things such as repatriation of your vehicle.

Personal or vehicle cover

Many providers will give you the choice of covering a named vehicle for breakdowns or for an additional fee will cover an individual (or with some policies a household of up to 4) against breakdowns. This usually means if they are the driver or a passenger of any privately registered vehicle they will be covered for a breakdown in it. Restrictions will vary by policy for personal cover.

Whether you drive often or less frequently, having breakdown cover in place is a good idea, as if you do breakdown getting help to come to assistance at the road side can be far more costly if you don’t have a comprehensive level of breakdown cover.

Although what each provider will cover you for varies in general they can help you with many other aspects than just a mechanical fault with your vehicle, for instance they could help if you lock your keys inside the car or if you run out of fuel on your journey.

Car breakdown cover plans come in different forms but generally provide a home option whereby if your car is within a certain mileage from your home the breakdown company will provide assistance.

  • Roadside plans require normally that you are outside a certain distance from home and if the vehicle cannot be repaired then it will be towed to a garage within a certain distance.
  • More comprehensive plans will provide additional services such as transporting you to your intended destination, putting you up for the night in accommodation if necessary, and car hire. It is important that you understand what your breakdown plan is covering you for so there are no unexpected surprises if your vehicle breaks down.

You will also find that to incite customers many breakdown insurance providers offer special discounts and incentives throughout the years, therefore you may want to view what offers are currently available from the different providers before you make your decision.

If you break down more than a certain distance from your home, many car breakdown insurers will carry out emergency repairs at the roadside if possible,  or tow you to the nearest garage if they cannot fix the fault.
